Description:
Medium-sized finch with conical bill, peaked hindcrown and broad white wingbars. Double whitish wing-bars in all plumages. Male has blue-grey crown and nape, orange-pink face and underparts, and maroon-brown mantle. Female is dull, with greyish-brown mantle and greyish-buff underparts.
Distribution:
Common passage migrant and winter visitor across the western Gilgit-Baltistan, rare in Baltistan region. Around upland fields with nearby bushes and mixed and conifer forest edges, agricultural areas, orchards and gardens rarely above 3000m.
Behavior:
Actively forages on ground throughout year, also at all levels in bushes and trees in spring and summer; occasionally pursues and catches flying insects. Usually encountered in small flocks, often in the company of other finches and buntings. Diet the most varied in the family, mostly small invertebrates and their larvae, also seeds and buds.
